9% of all U.S. conceptions occur during the peak month of December. Most babies are born in late September while the fewest are born in April. A multitude of studies has illustrated this to be true due to end-of-year holiday festivities, and the fact that sperm quality deteriorates during the summer due to changes in daylight length. 

Condom sales also double in the week before Christmas compared to the week after Christmas. This pattern suggests an increased appetite for sexual activity in the holiday season. The time from Christmas to New Years is associated with more opportunities to socialize and engage in a more self-indulgent lifestyle leading to sexual practices.

The holiday’s natural cold temperature also plays a role. Nearly twice as many people have turned down offers of sex due to too hot a temperature than if the temperature was too cold. In a Degrees of Pleasure study, 35% of participants refused sex because “it was too hot” whereas only 19% felt the same way because “it was too cold.” It’s more likely for sexual activity to occur the colder it is.
