At a United Nations Human Rights Summit Tuesday in Switzerland, The Obama Administration warned the world against gay and lesbian discrimination. The US has taken an official stance on declaring “equal treatment of gay, lesbian, and transgender people” making it “an explicit U.S. foreign policy goal.”

Hilary Rodham Clinton used strong language to compare the gay equality struggle to woman’s rights and racial equality, stating that a country’s cultural or religious traditions are no defense for discrimination. “Gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights. It should never be a crime to be gay.” It has become a “global challenge” to combat discrimination against the LGBTQ global community.

Obama has urged all “agencies engaged abroad (State Department and International Development Agency) to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of LGBTQ persons.”

These announcements marked the first U.S. government strategy to combat human rights abuses against gays and lesbians abroad. The fact that the United States will no longer turn a blind eye when global governments commit or allow abuses to LGBTQ people is a major advancement in protecting gay rights.

Even 90% of all Christians, according to a poll conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, their faith leads them to believe that the law should treat all people equally, including the LGBTQ community. The United States has finally made real advancements to take an international strategy towards global equality for LGBTQ people everywhere.
