ONE Condoms
Condoms used in Reuse or New Use Art Exhibition

“Recycling and Reincarnation: An Exhibition of Industrial Design, Installation and Mixed-Media Art,” is a new art exhibition at Stony Brook University. The exhibition showcases Chinese international Design School Students attending SBU and features a piece made from condoms.

The recycling theme of the exhibition was chosen for international relatability. The rapid development of the Chinese economy has grown to see an excessive amount of waste in daily life from electronics, to dry goods, to medical devices. The idea is to give these discarded found objects a new revitalization.

According to Wang DaZhou, the show’s curator, the concept of recycling and reincarnation is, “a green idea, and it’s also a spiritual idea; it has layered meaning. By reusing old objects you’re rejuvenating them, giving them life.”

In total, the show has more than 50 pieces by at least 70 artists. The most interesting found object of the show is entitled “Music School” which employs a collection of condoms pulled over laboratory tubes. Around each of the condoms the artist had painted a musical score from the West and the East. The artist states that the condoms represent a “new form of life - a more cheerful life.” The condoms become “like a concert.”

ONE Condoms supports self-expression particularly that of a green nature. What other ways could you see making condoms into art?
