October is LGBT History Month

October marks LGBT History month. Each day in October, the Equality Forum (a LGBT education centric civil rights organization) will be highlighting 31 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender icons. Each of the Icons are celebrated with a video, biography, downloadable images, and other resources.

Today, We celebrate Frida Kahlo. A vibrant Mexican Painter and Feminist/Lesbian Activist. Be sure to visit the Equality Forum’s site to see her paintings and learn about the amazing artist and activist. 

LGBT History Month helps to provide role model’s and help teach people about how the LGBT community has helped shape our world. In addition, it marks an important civil rights statement to foster the promotion and teaching of an LGBT education curriculum in the public school system. LGBT History Month was created in ‘94 when a Missouri High School Teacher began celebrating and teaching gay & lesbian history. A Yale History professor describes LGBT History month as “sending an important message to our nation’s teachers, school boards, community leaders, and youth about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in American history . “
